Rainbows

Who is not fascinated by the beauty of a rainbow appearing in the sky? They are relatively hard to photograph, I find, being better visible to the eye than to the camera. Also, sometimes they appear and disappear rather quickly, so it has to be just the right moment.

A few weeks ago (on May 18), I saw just the shimmer of a rainbow above one of the roofs I see from my kitchen window. Zoomed in, it became more visible, but it remained a stub, so to speak.

But the day before yesterday, Tuesday evening after work, I saw this beautiful rainbow while talking to O.K. on the phone:

I took many pictures and hope I have chosen the best two for you here.
By the way, I am not sure how well you can see it in the pictures, but the cherries have grown considerably and gained colour in the time between the first and second rainbows - they are almost ripe now, and it is only the first week of June!

  1. You are so right. Rainbows are very hard to photograph. Even when you spot one on open ground it is very difficult to get the entire rainbow in the camera frame. Your third picture is the best one in my humble opinion.

    1. Sorry for all the short, short comments. Just know that when they're like that, I'm probably typing on my phone on a work break or something. :)

      Have a great day!

  4. These are so beautiful. I always feel happy when I see a rainbow and the most incredible rainbow display I ever saw was while I was on a highway near Stuttgart in the early '70s. There were brilliant intense rainbows everywhere. I was surprised there were no car accidents. Everyone was looking at them, just stunned.

    1. It must have really been an extraordinary rainbow display if you remember it so well after all those years!
Sometimes when I spot a rainbow while I am out walking, I want to point it out to everybody and wonder, why aren't they all looking at the sky in awe?

  5. Rainbows AND cherries? Are you sure you not living in a Disney cartoon? :-)

I love the photos of the rainbow! You know I would have found "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" on YouTube and put it on here!

    1. He he, I'd like to be a Disney cartoon princess for a while, preferably in a sky-blue dress :-D
I bet you were humming that song to yourself while looking at the photos!

  6. Somewhere over the rainbow. . . . . . . . . perhaps there is a lovely world with peace and kindness, joy and honesty, a place we would all love to live in. . . . . . . . .and enjoy fresh cherries too!!!

Lovely pix - you really captured them well.

    1. Thank you, Mary!
Aren't cherries picked straight off the tree the best?

  7. Nice! Rainbows are lovely and we only have to spend the time to enjoy them for a free treat in our lives.

  9. The 'stubby' rainbow was probably taken very early morning or late evening when the sun was very low in the sky. All rainbows are an arc but the lower the sun the larger the arc and at sunset I often see an almost vertical stub over the Scottish mainland and then fins the other stub over to the west somewhere. I've got a feeling I blogged about it at some time in the past when I learned what caused the phenomenon.

    1. The stubby rainbow was evening; my kitchen window is facing East, so that I would not see a rainbow there in the morning, when the sun rays come from that direction.
The complete one in the second set of pictures was also taken on an evening after work, but it must have been a few hours earlier.

    2. Lovely rainbows, Meike. And thanks Graham for that comment, I don't think I've ever really thought about the time of day being involved in whether you see the full rainbow or just a stub.

    3. Yes, always good to learn something new, isn't it! And how nice if we learn from our blogging friends, as I do daily!
